Home Security Signs and Decals

If you want robust home security, you’re probably going to want to invest in a monitored home security camera system, complete with all of the bells and whistles. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford these kinds of systems. Furthermore, if you’re a renter, your landlord may not be willing to let you make the kinds of permanent modifications that are necessary in order to have such a system put in place. While there are some relatively low-cost solutions out there, some people find that simple home security signs can do quite a bit to deter theft.

What are home security signs?

In the most basic sense, home security signs are a way to try to deter thieves. Usually, the sign takes the form of a home security warning decal. These decals are placed at potential entrance points to your home. The idea here is that they’re visible from the outside of the home, and that they will help to deter thieves. They’re not very expensive at all, especially when compared to full systems.

How do home security signs work?

Home security signs are based on the idea that criminals can just as easily be deterred from your home psychologically as they can physically. A deadbolt, for example, keeps someone from forcing their way into your home. A sign can cause a potential home invader to take a step back, and think about whether or not he wants to invade your home, or someone else’s.

Do home security signs keep out burglars?

Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot of solid evidence when it comes to the effectiveness of these kinds of decals. You can’t exactly replicate the real-life environment in a lab, and criminals aren’t always eager to admit that they were going to break into a home but were deterred, regardless of what it was that deterred them.

Are they worth it?

Whether or not a home security sign is worth it, then, is hard to say. You’re not looking at a significant outlay of cash, and so you’re not making a tremendous risk by using them. However, if you think there is a significant risk that your home will be invaded and you want to truly protect your things and your family, you should probably look into more advanced deterrents.
