Choosing a Gun for Home Security

There are many levels of home security you can implement. Your home security system is a starting point, and although it’s not perfect, it can be the best deterrent against certain types of crimes. For some people, buying a gun is another level of security. The key is to treat gun ownership as a responsibility, and follow all of the important safety practices as far as gun use and storage.

When you get ready to choose a gun for home security purposes, there are some characteristics you should look out for:

  • Effectiveness. You want to choose a gun that will stop a threat. There are different opinions on this issue, but it all boils down to this: chances are pretty good that you’re going to have just one chance to take down someone who’s invading your home. A low-caliber gun can be less likely to stop a home invader than a high-caliber gun. To be sure, many criminals will simply give up or run away once they see a gun, especially if they’re not armed. You don’t want to have to fire it, but if you do have to fire it you want to know it’s going to stop the home invader.
  • Penetration. Another factor you need to look at in a gun is its penetration, or over penetration. A wall won’t stop a bullet. If you fire a gun in our home, you need to realize that everything behind it becomes a target as well. That means bystanders in the next room, or even in a nearby house.
  • Reliability. You want a gun that will fire when you pull the trigger. A gun that malfunctions doesn’t do you any good when it comes time to use it.
  • Price. Cost can be a factor for some people when choosing a gun for home defense. You can get a handgun for less than about $200, if you look around. There’s no reason to pay more than what you need.
  • Storage. If you intend to use a gun for home security, you need to make sure you have equipment or facilities to properly store it. A keypad safe is a great way to make sure no one else can get their hands on the gun, preventing accidents. It’s also one of the quickest ways to get to your gun in the event of an emergency.
