Ch-Ch-Ch Chain-Link Fencing For Home Security

David Bowie was on to something in his popular song “Changes,” when he sang, “I still don’t know what I was waiting for / and my time was running wild.” Our days are certainly wild and unpredictable, and that’s why there’s no time to wait when considering the security of your home. At any given moment, your home could be given a life-changing, unfortunate blow. Many homeowners and renters secure their living spaces with home security devices, burglar alarms, and a variety of video and audio monitors. But you can never be safe enough, and that is why many supplement their home security investments with protective barriers like the chain-link fence. Chain link fences can be both friendly and menacing, and this is why this type of fence is a safe choice for wrapping up your castle. Chain-link fences come in a variety of heights and are generally easy to install.

Typically, a chain link fence consists of thin, intertwined metal that forms a sheet of diamond-shaped gaps. Every few feet (3 to 4 feet) this mesh of wire latches on to a vertical metal bar that keeps the intertwined metal standing upright, creating the fence. Another metal bar can run horizontally across the top of the thinner wire, protecting encountering hands from the sharp metal diamond tips. If the fence is very tall (much too high for a child to reach, or climb, and scratch themselves) however, the horizontal metal bars can be omitted from the top of the fence, adding a level of security. The sharp wires at the top make it harder for a burglar to climb over the fence without catching his clothes or scarring exposed skin—a helpful force in deterring a burglary.

Perks

Why would a homeowner choose a chain-link fence? It seems metallic and cold, as opposed to a wood fence of natural material. The best part of a chain-link fence is that they are quite an affordable and adaptable investment. Also, they can seem transparent, and won’t hide your fabulous home. The diamond gaps allow plenty of light and visibility, so you still appear friendly to your neighbors, while protecting your home with a strong guard. Also, plants can easily grow through the fence, to make it prettier. And if pretty is not your intent, you can even choose a chain-link fence with smaller gaps, so the metal is more visible, and gives more of a warning.

Height

Chain-link fences range in size from 3-feet to 12-feet, depending on their purpose and area. Many homeowners that are simply using their fence to define a perimeter will choose a shorter, 3.5 to 4 foot fence. For a stronger message, and a fence as primary protection, choose a fence at 8-feet, or even taller. You may want to consult with your homeowners association on height policy.

You can opt to leave the fence door accessible to any visitor, or you can add a combination or hard-wired high tech lock to the door. It’s your choice, as you have many options. But, like David Bowie sang, time is of the essence, and it’s never too late to change your mind about how you want to protect your home.
