How to Program your Home Link System for Better Home Security
New vehicle manufacturers have given homeowners the opportunity to control their home security systems features from the comfort of their car. Remote control options give the homeowner the added benefit of controlling garage door lights and home security features from a touch of a dashboard button or sun visor. Home Link works off of radio frequency codes that can be used to open garage doors, community gates, entry door locks and office and home lighting. The system operates by duplicating and storing codes from original transmitters. It’s not hard to program your fancy new Home Link system if you follow a few simple instructions.
1. Locate your remote handheld transmitter and have it handy before starting. Next, hold the button down on your cars Home Link System (some are located on the rearview mirror). You should see a yellow or orange light appear as the button is depressed. Make sure to hold the button down while also depressing your transmitter at the same time for at least 25 seconds until the indicator light starts to flash. Continue to hold down the button until the yellow light flashing appears to transform to a rapid flash.
2. Next, get out of your car and proceed to your actual garage door opener in the garage. Find the program button (it’s usually located where the wires come into your opener) and depress it until you see a flashing red light.
3. Get back in your car and find the garage door opener button on your Home Link sun visor or dash and you will want to depress that button three or four times until the signal has been excepted and your garage door closes. You will know if this procedure has been done correctly, because your garage door will not close. If this is the case, repeat the steps above again.
Home Link programming instructions might differ from vehicle to vehicle, but basic setup should be somewhat similar. For some vehicles you might have to depress the two outside buttons labeled 1 and 3 before any indicator lights begin to flash. Keep in mind that your handheld garage door transmitter needs to be within 1 to 3 inches from your Home Link device during programming. Devices that utilize rolling code technology such as any garage doors manufactured after 1996 may require additional programming. If you have any questions regarding programming, consult HomeLink.com or call your local garage door installer. Home Link is a home security systems best friend and will give you the comfort of knowing you can control that friend remotely from your car.
