Five Steps to Selecting the Best Home Security System

It’s no secret that a home security system can get pretty costly so it is very important that you determine what your security needs are before you ever start consulting with any professional alarm companies.  Here are 5 important steps that you should take before you ever start calling any of these companies and getting estimates for installing a security system in your home.

Take a survey of your home – you’ll want to determine what doors and windows that you want integrated into your home security system.

Determine where you want to place your control panel and the keyboard – many people who use the front door of their homes to enter there will place the control panel and keyboard right inside the door.  However, if you enter your home through an enclosed garage, then you would place it there.  In many instances, people prefer to place their control panels and keypads in both locations.

Calculate the distance from the control panel to each of the doors and windows that are going to be integrated into your home security system – this enables you to know how far wires need to be routed should you go with a wired system.  Additionally, if you are considering a wireless system, this is also important since you need to know the distance involved for the system to communicate with all the sensors.

Decide whether or not you want a system that is monitored around the clock – a monthly fee will be involved for this, but you will have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that someone is protecting your home and its contents with a monitored home security system whenever you are not there.  Another less expensive option employs a dialer and a basic sensor system connected to your phone line.  It will automatically dial pre-selected telephone numbers if your home security system is breached.

Take your lifestyle into consideration – if there are people in the home who come in at all hours of the night based on career or nighttime activities, you will need to consider this when setting up the system.  Another aspect to consider is if you have large pets that roam the house throughout the night when you and your family are sleeping.  All of these factors will enable you to determine the types of motion sensors that you want to install so that you are not experiencing false alarms.
