Community Gets Serious about Home Security

While burglaries and home invasions may feel like they’re commonplace in larger metropolitan areas, the fact is that they’re an oddity in many small towns. When a burglary occurs in a small town, it can really shake a community. This is especially true if the burglary winds up in violence. It might not surprise you to discover that, when that sort of thing occurs, there’s often a spike in sales of home security systems and even handguns.

Take, for example, the town of North Brandford in New Haven County, Connecticut. The local news station reports that this exact phenomenon occurred recently.

Five armed, masked men entered a home in this upscale neighborhood at about 10:30 on a Sunday Night. While they were there, they held three family members as hostages until around 3 AM. During that time, they searched the home for valuables, including cash and jewelry. Fortunately, none of the family members were injured.

Since then, a local home security system dealer has seen a spike in sales. The owner of the company reports that sales have increased from one a day to three or four, and that more and more people are actually buying home security systems rather than simply calling to check on prices.

A local gun shop is experiencing the same kind of spike in business. The owner of that shop has indicated a 400% increase in sales in the week following the home invasion.

In July 2007, the community experienced a tragedy where several members of one family were murdered. During that time, there was also a rise in gun sales, according to the store owner. In addition, there have been more women applying for gun safety courses since that time.

While statistically speaking small towns have fewer incidences of home invasions and burglaries, the fact of the matter is that when one occurs people aren’t comforted by statistics. They want peace of mind – the kind of peace of mind that comes from taking measures to protect your home. A home security system is one way to give yourself and your family that peace of mind.
